It really doesn't matter what you wear. It doesn't matter where on the island you live.   At Community Baptist Church of Gay Head, as with God's table, everyone is welcome here, no questions or explanations needed. Our focus is on building a relationship with God and strengthening the spiritual bonds with our neighbors and community.

Community Baptist Church of Gay Head

Constituted in 1693, Community Baptist Church of Gay Head is the oldest Native American Baptist Church in North America.  The original wood framed building was built in 1698 down on the Old South Road, and relocated in 1850 to its present location ”up the hill” to the center of town, using some of the original old rafters.

The current congregation is small; we have no regular musical accompaniment for our singing, but we gather each Sunday at 9:00 a.m. for worship, hymn singing, scripture lessons and prayer led by The Rev. Ellen P. Tatreau.  For more than 50 years the church has shared a yoked ministry with First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven.  Periodically, we gather together for worship and community service endeavors. Bible Study convenes on Thursday evenings during the fall, winter and spring months.  The location rotates among the homes of participants and is announced on Sunday mornings.
